Shangazi
£650plus postage and packaging
Shangazi means "aunt" in Swahili: the one in every family who keeps an eye on the little ones. Fourteen elephants stand back to back in a light grey-blue glaze, the older ones on the outside sheltering the young. Like every herd it is built by hand from around seventy pieces of clay, dried slowly for two weeks and finished with six layers of glaze brushed on by hand, so the colour shifts as the light moves round it.
